Tue Mar 11 17:19:18 UTC 2025: ## Mysuru Zoo Implements Heatwave Measures to Protect Animals
**Mysuru, Karnataka, March 11, 2025** – With temperatures soaring in Mysuru, the city’s zoo has implemented a range of measures to protect its animals from the heatwave. These initiatives focus on mitigating heat stress and ensuring the well-being of the diverse animal population.
The zoo has activated water jets and sprinklers across all enclosures, providing immediate cooling relief and maintaining optimal temperatures. Special attention is being given to Great Apes, who receive fresh coconuts twice daily and benefit from newly installed fans and coolers in their night quarters. Dietary adjustments include the addition of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and hydrating fruits like watermelon and cucumber to the animals’ diets, particularly for primates. Chimpanzees are receiving extra tender coconuts, known for their hydrating properties.
Other cooling strategies include providing Himalayan Black Bears with ice blocks and frozen fruit cubes, and creating mud wallows for herbivores. The zoo is also monitoring enclosure temperatures using thermometers and ensuring ponds remain full. Water sprinkler systems are in place for the enclosures of tigers, lions, and other animals. Zoo officials are closely monitoring the health of all animals and birds, utilizing the natural shade provided by the enclosures’ design. The zoo’s efforts highlight a proactive approach to animal welfare during extreme weather conditions.
