Mon Mar 10 14:15:17 UTC 2025: ## Mumbai Poised for Economic Boom with Seven New Business Centers and Major Infrastructure Projects

**Mumbai, India –** Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar announced ambitious plans Monday to transform Mumbai’s economy, unveiling a massive infrastructure development program aimed at boosting its GDP from USD 140 billion to USD 1.5 trillion by 2047. The centerpiece of this plan is the establishment of seven international-standard business centers across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including locations in Bandra-Kurla Complex, Kurla-Worli, Wadala, Goregaon, Navi Mumbai, Kharghar, and Virar-Bhoisar.

The budget also highlighted the upcoming Vadhavan port, a Rs 76,220 crore (USD 9.2 billion) project in which the state government holds a 26% stake. Expected to commence operations by 2030, this port will boast an annual cargo handling capacity of 300 million metric tonnes – three times that of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust. The port’s strategic location will see it connected to the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway and will be situated near the planned Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train station and the third Mumbai airport.

Further bolstering connectivity, Pawar announced the imminent commencement of a metro line connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to Navi Mumbai International Airport. The latter, nearing completion with 85% of construction finished and test flights already conducted, is set to begin domestic operations in April and will have the capacity to handle 90 million passengers and 2.6 million tonnes of cargo annually. The state also plans to expand metro lines, adding 64.4 km in the next financial year (41.2 km in Mumbai and 23.2 km in Pune), with a total of 237.5 km operational within five years.

Other initiatives include a new policy offering financial incentives for improved boat services between the Gateway of India and Mandwa/Elephanta, upgrades to Nagpur’s Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, the launch of passenger services at Amravati airport by month’s end, and surveys for a new airport in Gadchiroli, along with Akola airport expansion. These combined efforts signal a significant investment in Maharashtra’s infrastructure and a bold vision for Mumbai’s future as a global economic powerhouse.
