Tensions between India and Canada escalated last year after Prime Minister Trudeau alleged Indian government agents’ involvement in the killing of pro-Khalistan separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India vehemently denied these allegations, citing a lack of evidence from the Canadian government. The dispute led to a tit-for-tat recall of diplomats.

In a statement following his election, Carney emphasized the need to diversify Canada’s trade relationships and rebuild ties with India based on shared values. He acknowledged the damage caused to the bilateral relationship by the previous government’s actions. “There are opportunities to rebuild the relationship with India,” Carney stated, referencing the ongoing trade war and annexation threats from the United States.
