Mon Mar 10 20:51:55 UTC 2025: ## Secunderabad Cantonment Merger Talks Hit Snag Over Road Compensation

**Hyderabad, March 11, 2025** – Negotiations to merge civilian areas of the Secunderabad Cantonment with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have stalled due to disagreements over compensation for land needed for a new road.

A proposed 6-kilometer road, requiring 42 acres of Defence land, is at the heart of the dispute. The GHMC offered compensation of approximately ₹450 crore, based on the 2013 Land Acquisition Act. However, this offer has been rejected. The Defence authorities are reportedly seeking an alternative 35-acre site in lieu of monetary compensation, in addition to lease payments for seven acres needed for a flyover.

The impasse comes despite over two years of deliberations by an eight-member committee tasked with examining the merger’s implications, including land, assets, employees, and civic services. The committee reportedly submitted its report three months ago.

A joint inspection is scheduled in a week to further assess the situation, followed by a meeting between GHMC and Defence officials to resolve the deadlock. GHMC Commissioner K. Ilambarithi was unavailable for comment.
