Tue Mar 11 01:08:38 UTC 2025: ## Palestinian Student Activist Arrested, Sparking Free Speech Concerns

**New York, NY** – The arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian student activist at Columbia University, has ignited a firestorm of controversy, with rights groups denouncing the action as a blatant attack on free speech. ICE agents detained Khalil, a lawful permanent resident of the US, at his university housing on Saturday.

While the official justification cites concerns about combating anti-Semitism, critics argue this is a pretext to suppress pro-Palestinian activism. Professor Nader Hashemi of Georgetown University alleges the arrest is an attempt to appease right-wing pro-Israel factions within the Republican Party by silencing support for Palestinian rights.

President Trump, in a social media post, accused student protesters of “pro-terrorist, anti-Semitic, anti-American activity,” without providing evidence. He further suggested Khalil’s arrest was the first of many to come, vowing to deport “terrorist sympathizers.”

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) accuses Khalil of activities aligned with Hamas, but experts contend this allegation is vague and could be applied broadly to anyone critical of Israeli or US foreign policy. Will Creeley of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) called the rationale a “loophole so big that you could drive a truck through it,” expressing concern about a chilling effect on free speech.

Khalil’s lawyer, Amy Greer, stated that ICE agents initially seemed misinformed about his immigration status, planning to revoke his student visa before learning he holds a green card. His transfer to a Louisiana detention facility, far from his legal team and family, is also raising concerns about tactics employed by ICE. A federal court hearing is scheduled for March 12th.

Critics link the arrest to Project 2025, a right-wing policy proposal that equates pro-Palestine protests with a “global Hamas Support Network.” This, coupled with past efforts by pro-Israel groups to label criticism of Israeli policies as anti-Semitism, suggests a pattern of suppressing dissent. The arrest is viewed by many as an escalation of existing efforts to silence pro-Palestine voices. Protests have already been held in response to Khalil’s detention. Legal experts and activists warn that this could set a dangerous precedent for anyone expressing views that challenge government policies.
