Mon Mar 10 16:36:48 UTC 2025: ## Kerala’s GST Revenue Up 8%, State Fights for Fair Share in Council

**Thiruvananthapuram, March 10, 2025** – Kerala’s Finance Minister, K.N. Balagopal, announced a robust 8% increase in Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue this fiscal year compared to the previous one. Addressing the Assembly on Monday, Mr. Balagopal highlighted the state government’s proactive approach in the GST Council to protect its revenue interests.

Overall state tax revenue has significantly increased from ₹47,000 crore in 2020-21 to ₹81,000 crore in 2024-25. The government aims for further growth, and a restructuring of the State GST Department is underway to facilitate this.

The Minister acknowledged public complaints regarding the inconsistent GST rates on bakery products, with some items attracting an 18% tax while others are taxed at 5%. Kerala has raised this issue with the GST Council.

Finally, Mr. Balagopal reiterated that the recent land tax increase announced in the 2025-26 budget is minor and will not impose a significant burden on citizens.
