**Jammu, March 9, 2025** – Three civilians were brutally murdered in the Billawar tehsil of Kathua district, Jammu and Kashmir, prompting widespread protests and a shutdown in the area. Union Minister Jitendra Singh confirmed the involvement of terrorists in the killings, describing the incident as a “matter of great concern” and a potential conspiracy to destabilize the region.
The bodies of 15-year-old Varun Singh and his uncles, Yogesh Singh (32) and Darshan Singh (40), were discovered Saturday in Ishu nullah. Minister Singh announced that Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan is traveling to Jammu to assess the situation and ensure similar incidents are prevented.
The killings have fueled public outrage. Bani MLA Rameshwar Singh, who visited the victims’ families, was assaulted by protesters at a local hospital, highlighting the rising tensions. MLA Singh linked the attack to his advocacy for both the deceased and Makhan Din, a Gujjar youth who recently died by suicide, allegedly due to police torture. He criticized the attacks as attempts to silence those who speak out for Muslim community members.
Protests erupted Sunday, with a shutdown observed in Billawar and surrounding areas. Local BJP leader Gopal Krishan demanded intensified anti-terrorist operations to neutralize terrorists believed to be hiding in the area’s forests. While BJP MLA Satish Sharma acknowledged the terror angle, he stressed the need for a thorough investigation before drawing definitive conclusions. The Congress party has called for a high-level inquiry to address public anxieties. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary expressed concern over both the killings and the attack on MLA Singh.
