Sat Mar 08 00:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Coin Flip Crowns South Carolina SEC Women’s Basketball Champions

**Greenville, SC** – The No. 6 South Carolina Gamecocks clinched a share of the Southeastern Conference regular season title Sunday, defeating No. 15 Kentucky 78-66. Chloe Kitts led the Gamecocks with a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds), while Tessa Johnson added 16 points. The victory, coupled with No. 1 Texas’ win over Florida, resulted in a 15-1 conference record for both teams.

A coin flip, broadcast live on the SEC Network during halftime of another game, ultimately decided the top seed for the SEC tournament. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey performed the toss in Birmingham, Alabama, with South Carolina winning the right to be the No. 1 seed and securing the advantage of an earlier game time in the tournament, held in Greenville. South Carolina coach Dawn Staley expressed relief after the somewhat unusual tiebreaker.

While the coin flip gave South Carolina the early game Friday, Texas may have a slightly easier path to the final. The Longhorns’ potential semifinal opponent, LSU, will be without star player Flau’Jae Johnson due to a shin injury. Despite this, Texas center Taylor Jones stated that her team will focus on the game itself, regardless of the opponent. The Gamecocks have now won at least a share of the regular-season title for four consecutive seasons.
