**Bengaluru, March 6, 2025** – Bollywood actress Ranya Rao remains in judicial custody after a hearing on her bail application was adjourned until Friday. Rao was arrested on Monday at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru for allegedly smuggling approximately 1 kg of gold into India from Dubai.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) is seeking further custody to investigate a suspected international smuggling syndicate. Sources within the DRI claim Rao concealed the gold, attached with adhesive tape and bandages, under her clothing, suggesting a sophisticated operation and prior experience. They allege she misused her stepfather, DGP K Ramachandra Rao’s, official protocol to expedite her exit from the airport, minimizing security checks.
The DRI contends that Rao’s frequent trips to Dubai and interactions with various individuals indicate involvement in a larger network. They argue that granting bail would hinder the ongoing investigation into this national security matter. Rao’s defense team, however, is contesting the DRI’s claims.
The court will decide on Friday whether to grant bail or allow the DRI to retain custody for further investigation.
