Thu Mar 06 18:08:29 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu to Inaugurate Hundreds of New Health Centers

**Chennai, March 6, 2025** – Tamil Nadu is set to significantly expand its healthcare infrastructure with the inauguration of 258 new urban health and wellness centers (HWCs) and primary health centers (PHCs) this month. Health Minister Ma. Subramanian announced the upcoming openings, following a meeting with district health officers.

This expansion builds upon the June 2023 launch of 500 urban HWCs. The upcoming additions will bring the total number of urban HWCs to 708, spread across 21 corporations and 63 municipalities. The Minister emphasized the importance of filling any vacant positions at the existing centers and urged the expedited recruitment of necessary personnel. He also highlighted the need to address the shortage of doctors in some HWCs.

Addressing the state of existing facilities, Mr. Subramanian requested a list of dilapidated PHC and Health Sub-Centre (HSC) buildings. The state has approximately 2,500 to 3,000 facilities operating in rented or poor condition. While new buildings have been constructed for half of these, the Minister wants a list of the remaining buildings requiring urgent attention this year.

Further improvements include reviewing the implementation of the Health Walks initiative and the maintenance of its pathways. A successful community-based cancer screening program, currently running in four districts, will be expanded statewide within the next 10 days.

Finally, the Minister noted that 15,325 individuals have benefitted from the “Idhayam Kappom Thittam,” a scheme providing cardiac loading doses at PHCs and HSCs for acute coronary syndrome patients before referral to specialized centers. The Chief Minister will inaugurate the new facilities via video conference in the coming weeks.
