**Hyderabad, March 6, 2025** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a significant victory in the recently concluded Telangana MLC elections, winning two out of three contested seats. This outcome represents a setback for the ruling Congress party, which despite extensive campaigning by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and several ministers, failed to secure a majority. A Teachers’ Union candidate won the remaining seat.
The BJP’s wins included the Karimnagar-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Medak Graduates’ constituency, where Anji Reddy, a BJP-backed candidate, defeated the Congress nominee, Narender Reddy. In the Karimnagar-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Medak Teachers’ constituency, Malka Komaraiah, a BJP-backed candidate and chairperson of a prominent educational institution, triumphed over established teacher union leaders. The Congress party, while not openly endorsing candidates in the Teachers’ constituencies, is believed to have offered unofficial support to some nominees.
The absence of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), the main opposition party, from the election is a notable factor. The Congress has accused the BJP and BRS of an “unholy nexus,” while the BJP attributes its success to the Congress’ waning popularity and Revanth Reddy’s ineffective leadership.
The BJP’s success is credited to a focused campaign strategy spearheaded by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay Kumar. His team meticulously targeted voters and capitalized on the perceived failure of both the Congress and BRS to address teachers’ concerns. Mr. Komaraiah’s substantial financial resources also played a significant role.
The Congress party is now facing internal strife following the MLC election losses. The suspension of MLC Chintapandu Naveen, who has openly criticized the party, adds to its woes. Upcoming elections for four more MLC vacancies will further test the party’s leadership, as it navigates competing demands from various factions within the party and allied parties.
The BRS, having suffered recent electoral defeats, chose not to contest these elections, prioritizing the upcoming local body polls where it hopes to capitalize on demands for increased Backward Classes (BC) reservations. The Congress, however, is confident of winning a majority of the upcoming MLC vacancies. The outcome of the local body polls will ultimately determine which party holds the strongest popular support.
