**AIZAWL, Mizoram —** Two prominent Myanmar pro-democracy rebel groups, the Chinland Council and the Interim Chin National Consultative Council (ICNCC), have merged to form the Chin National Council, sources confirmed. The agreement was signed on February 27th in Aizawl, Mizoram’s capital, under the observation of Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and local leaders.
Representatives from the groups’ respective armed wings, the Chin National Army and the Chin Brotherhood, were also present at the signing ceremony. This unification represents a significant development in the ongoing conflict against Myanmar’s military junta.
The merger comes amidst a protracted civil war, where the junta, despite suffering territorial losses following a 2023 rebel offensive, maintains a significant advantage through its air power, heavily reliant on arms supplied by Russia. Moscow’s support has proven crucial for the Myanmar military in its fight against numerous ethnic armed groups and pro-democracy forces across the country. The newly formed Chin National Council will now be a key player in this complex conflict.
