**Gandhinagar, Gujarat –** A high-level committee tasked with drafting a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for Gujarat has launched a public consultation process. Chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Desai, the five-member committee aims to create a code that prioritizes equal rights for women and child welfare.
A dedicated web portal, http://www.uccgujarat.in, has been established to gather suggestions from citizens, government agencies, NGOs, and religious organizations. The deadline for submissions is March 24th.
Justice Desai emphasized the importance of public participation, stating that the committee will focus on ensuring equal rights in marriage and divorce, while respecting religious rituals. The registration of all marriages and divorces will be mandatory, with divorce proceedings adhering to existing laws. The committee also plans to draft provisions for inheritance and live-in relationships.
While the committee aims to complete its report within 45 days, as per the Chief Minister’s directive, Justice Desai acknowledged that the extensive public consultation process may require additional time. The committee has already begun meeting with various stakeholders, including state government commissions and representatives from religious and political groups.
The committee’s work builds upon the implementation of a UCC in Uttarakhand and aligns with the directive principles of the Indian Constitution and previous Supreme Court judgments. The five-member panel includes retired IAS officer C.L. Meena, advocate R.C. Kodekar, educationist Daxesh Thakar, and social worker Gita Shroff.
