Tue Mar 04 17:02:27 UTC 2025: ## Chennai to Launch Extensive Mini-Bus Network to Tackle Last-Mile Connectivity Issues
**Chennai, March 4, 2025** – Chennai residents struggling with expensive autorickshaw rides for the final leg of their commutes will soon have relief. The Chennai district administration has announced plans to introduce a comprehensive mini-bus network across the city’s extended areas, addressing long-standing last-mile connectivity issues.
The initiative, slated to launch May 1st, will see mini-buses operate on 72 routes across 240 square kilometers, focusing on areas like Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi, and Sholinganallur. The core city areas will be excluded in this initial phase. The government aims to deploy between 18,750 and 25,000 mini-buses across Tamil Nadu.
The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is also planning to introduce premium bus services through private operators, primarily catering to office-goers. The mini-bus fares will range from ₹4 to ₹10, depending on the distance (up to 20 kilometers). Vehicles will have a capacity of 7 to 25 passengers.
This move follows a recent government order authorizing the operation of mini-buses throughout Tamil Nadu. The Chennai Collector, Rashmi Siddharth Zagade, has invited applications from mini-bus operators to participate in the project. Permits will be issued by the Regional Transport Authorities, adhering to the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988.
While the MTC previously attempted mini-bus services, this new initiative aims to improve accessibility and affordability, particularly in underserved areas. Transport activists have welcomed the plan, highlighting the long-standing need for improved connectivity in areas like Nanganallur and Palavanthangal. The project represents a significant step towards enhancing public transport in Chennai, building upon existing infrastructure like the Metro Rail and expanded suburban train services.
