Tue Mar 04 19:59:16 UTC 2025: ## Delhi University Withdraws Proposal to Include Manusmriti and Baburnama in History Curriculum
**NEW DELHI, March 5, 2025** – Delhi University (DU) has withdrawn a proposal to include the Hindu religious text Manusmriti and the Mughal emperor Babur’s memoirs, Baburnama, in its history curriculum. The proposal, initiated by the History department’s Joint Committee of Courses on February 19th, sparked immediate controversy.
Several professors voiced their objections, with some criticizing the inclusion of the texts themselves and others arguing that the proposal lacked sufficient critical perspective. In response to the backlash, DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh announced the university’s decision to drop the proposal, stating that DU is a “progressive university” and the texts are not “worth considering” in the 21st century.
Singh specifically referred to the Baburnama as the “autobiography of a tyrant” with no relevance today. He emphasized that DU is focused on developing its study materials to align with India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. The Vice-Chancellor clarified that there were internal discussions regarding the proposal, but ultimately the university decided against its implementation.
