**Chennai, India** – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin convened a meeting of 58 state parties on Wednesday to address concerns over the upcoming delimitation exercise and alleged Hindi imposition by the BJP-led central government. The meeting, notably excluding the BJP and its allies but including the rival AIADMK, resulted in a resolution urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to base the delimitation on 1971 population figures and freeze it for 30 years.
The resolution argues that using current population data would unfairly penalize states like Tamil Nadu, which have successfully implemented population control measures. It calls for any increase in parliamentary seats to maintain the proportional representation based on the 1971 census, preventing a reduction in Tamil Nadu’s representation. The resolution also proposes a joint action committee of southern state MPs to raise public awareness.
The BJP and its allies boycotted the meeting, accusing the DMK of using the issue to distract from alleged law and order problems. They countered that the delimitation would not disadvantage southern states and that Home Minister Amit Shah had assured them that no seats would be lost.
The meeting also addressed the contentious issue of Hindi imposition. While the BJP defends its three-language policy as offering choice, the DMK and AIADMK view it as a push for Hindi dominance. The BJP’s state unit is currently conducting a door-to-door campaign to promote the policy.
Chief Minister Stalin’s recent comments urging young Tamil couples to have more children to increase the state’s political representation have further fueled the debate, highlighting the high stakes of the delimitation issue ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The differing stances on delimitation and the three-language policy promise to be key campaign issues in the upcoming elections.
