**CHENNAI, March 5, 2025** – Chennai’s ambitious Phase II Metro Rail project is progressing steadily, with its innovative double-decker corridor expected to be operational by July 2026. This crucial section, part of the ₹63,246 crore project spanning 118.9 km, will significantly enhance connectivity between localities like Alapakkam and Karambakkam along Arcot Road.
The double-decker design, a first for Chennai, will allow for simultaneous operation of four trains across two corridors (Corridor 4: Light House to Poonamallee and Corridor 5: Madhavaram to Sholinganallur). Corridor 4 will run on the lower level, while Corridor 5 will utilize the upper level. A section of Corridor 4, extending from Poonamallee to Porur, is slated to open this December, with further extension to Kodambakkam by July 2026. This extension includes eight new stations and a four-kilometer double-decker stretch, offering convenient interchange with the existing Phase I network at Vadapalani.
CMRL officials acknowledged the engineering challenges posed by space constraints, particularly along the narrow Arcot Road. The construction employed specialized equipment, including a unique launching girder and large gantry cranes, to overcome these obstacles. While progress has been slower in some areas like Vadapalani, officials remain confident of meeting the July 2026 deadline. The current focus is on completing station construction and track laying along the double-decker section.
