**Hyderabad, March 4, 2025** – The Telangana High Court on Monday disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the expedited rescue of eight workers trapped in a collapsed tunnel of the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) project. The court considered the Advocate General’s explanation of the ongoing rescue efforts.
The PIL, filed by the National Union for Migrant Workers, urged the court to direct the state government to intensify rescue operations, compensate the families of the trapped workers, and implement safety measures to prevent similar incidents.
Advocate General A. Sudershan Reddy informed the court that a section of the 44-kilometer SLBC-1 tunnel collapsed near Srisailam, trapping eight workers. He detailed the extensive rescue operation underway, involving the Indian Army, Indian Navy, NDRF, SDRF, HYDRAA, Singareni Collieries’ technical teams, and expert rat miners. State cabinet members and the Chief Minister have also visited the site.
While the court disposed of the PIL, it noted that issues regarding worker safety and compensation remain open for future consideration. The petitioner’s counsel had argued for immediate compensation and improved safety measures for workers in such high-risk projects.
