Mon Mar 03 05:56:06 UTC 2025: ## New Chennai Flyover Causes Mixed Reactions
**Chennai, March 3, 2025** – A newly opened U-turn flyover at the Tidel Park junction in Chennai has yielded mixed results, with some drivers reporting improved traffic flow while others cite ongoing congestion.
The flyover, designed to alleviate traffic gridlock, has been praised by authorities for significantly reducing wait times at the junction. A spokesperson for the Greater Chennai Police’s Joint Commissioner (Traffic), South, stated that the average time spent at the junction has decreased dramatically and that the area “looks better and navigating it is a lot easier.” They attributed initial congestion to drivers adjusting to the new configuration and promised the installation of additional signboards to improve navigation. The flyover is also expected to improve traffic flow towards the Ascendas IT Park, home to nearly 20,000 employees.
However, commuters have voiced concerns. One driver, who regularly travels between Madhya Kailash and Taramani, described the flyover as “narrow,” leading to congestion and forcing detours. He noted that the changes haven’t personally benefited him, as he still faces delays. Another commuter, who frequently travels to IIT-Madras from Karapakkam, observed an increase in U-turns along OMR (Old Mahabalipuram Road) due to ongoing metro construction, further complicating his commute. He reports significant increases in travel time due to the ongoing construction.
While the police remain optimistic, citing a smooth traffic flow on Mahashivaratri (a recent public holiday), the long-term effectiveness of the flyover remains to be seen. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges of managing traffic in a rapidly growing city.
