**Uyuni, Bolivia –** A horrific head-on collision between two passenger buses in southwest Bolivia has claimed the lives of at least 37 people, including two children, and left 39 more injured. The accident occurred approximately 7:00 a.m. local time on Saturday, March 1st, a few kilometers from Uyuni, a popular tourist gateway to the Salar de Uyuni salt flat.
One of the buses was en route to Oruro, where a major carnival celebration is currently underway. Images from the scene show rescue workers extracting survivors from the wreckage amidst bodies covered in blankets. Bolivian police reported that one of the drivers, both of whom survived, was allegedly seen consuming alcohol prior to the crash.
The accident highlights the dangers of Bolivia’s notoriously hazardous road network, which suffers from poor maintenance and inadequate supervision, resulting in an average of 1,400 fatalities annually. The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
