Sun Mar 02 11:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Aligarh: Ramadan Begins, Muslims Observe Long Fasts
**ALIGARH, INDIA** – The holy month of Ramadan has begun, with Muslims worldwide engaging in prayer and fasting. The sighting of the Ramadan moon has led to increased activity in mosques, particularly for Taraweeh prayers, as Muslims begin their fasts with devotion. This month is considered a time of self-restraint, patience, worship, and seeking Allah’s blessings. Muslims strive for self-improvement and increased acts of piety.
This year’s fasts in Aligarh will vary in length, with the longest lasting 13 hours and 53 minutes and the shortest lasting 10 hours and 59 minutes. Mufti Zahid explained that the duration of the fast fluctuates due to varying sunrise and sunset times across geographical locations. The 29th day’s fast will be 13 hours and 50 minutes long, while the 30th will be 13 hours and 53 minutes. This gradual increase, though not significant, presents a test of patience and self-discipline for the faithful.
Mufti Zahid emphasized that Ramadan is not merely about abstaining from food and water; it’s a journey of self-purification and drawing closer to Allah. Muslims control their eating habits and strive to overcome negative traits and actions. Helping the needy, giving charity (Zakat), and devoting time to worship are integral parts of the month.
The commencement of Taraweeh prayers has brought a special atmosphere to mosques, with imams reciting the Quran throughout Ramadan, enhancing the spiritual ambiance. Fasting individuals wake for Suhoor before starting their fast and break it at Iftar after sunset. Ramadan is considered a time of blessings, forgiveness, and salvation for Muslims, a period observed with utmost devotion.
