Sat Mar 01 15:00:53 UTC 2025: **Tamil Nadu to Release First-Ever Economic Survey Alongside State Budget**
Chennai, March 1, 2025 – The Tamil Nadu government will release its inaugural Economic Survey on March 14, coinciding with the presentation of the State Budget in the Assembly. Unlike the Union government, which releases its Economic Survey a day before the budget, Tamil Nadu’s budget session will begin directly with the budget, leaving no room for prior public release of the survey.
The creation of the Economic Survey has been under consideration for some time. A precursor, a working paper titled “Economic Overview of Tamil Nadu,” was published last year by the Madras School of Economics, incorporating data from the State government. Tamil Nadu will be the last of the southern states to introduce such a document, with variations in nomenclature and preparation across states. While the Finance Department in Tamil Nadu will prepare the survey, other states utilize their Planning Departments.
Mirroring the Union government’s Economic Survey, the Tamil Nadu version will cover macroeconomic trends and detail the performance of the primary (agriculture, etc.), secondary (manufacturing, etc.), and tertiary (services) sectors. It will also analyze public finance, prices, poverty, employment, and sustainable development goals.
Preliminary data, from a working paper authored by C. Rangarajan and K.R. Shanmugam, indicates that in 2022-23, Tamil Nadu’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) was primarily driven by the services sector (48.8%), followed by manufacturing (18.8%) and agriculture (11.6%). The state’s economic growth rate has been robust, averaging 8.08% from 2021-22 to 2023-24. In 2022-23, Tamil Nadu ranked third nationally in GSDP (at constant prices), after Maharashtra and Gujarat.
