Sat Mar 01 12:23:12 UTC 2025: ## Kerala Man Confesses to Five Murders, Driven by Debt and Suicide Pact

**Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala:** A 23-year-old man, Afan, has confessed to the brutal murders of five family members and his girlfriend in Venjaramoodu, a suburb of Thiruvananthapuram. Police say Afan, burdened by a ₹65 lakh debt, initially planned a mass suicide involving his mother, brother, and himself.

The killings, which took place on Monday, involved Afan’s grandmother, paternal uncle and aunt, his 13-year-old brother, and his girlfriend, Farsana. He also attacked his mother, who survived. Following the murders, Afan surrendered at the Venjaramoodu police station.

According to police, Afan’s family faced harassment from creditors due to the substantial debt. He targeted his relatives, believing they weren’t providing sufficient financial support. When his suicide pact with his mother and brother failed, he proceeded with the murders. He killed his girlfriend, claiming he believed she wouldn’t be able to live without him.

Superintendent of Police KS Sudarshan stated that Afan’s behavior after surrendering was unusual, prompting a mental health evaluation. While financial strain is considered the primary motive, investigators will explore other contributing factors. The police are also examining inconsistencies in statements given by Afan’s parents regarding the extent of their debt. His father, Rahim, who recently returned from Saudi Arabia, claimed awareness of only a ₹15 lakh debt.

Afan will be questioned by mental health experts to determine his mental state at the time of the crimes. The investigation is ongoing.
