KOZHIKODE, March 1, 2025 – Five Class X students have been charged with murder following a fatal clash near a tuition center in Thamarassery, Kozhikode. The incident, which occurred on February 27th, resulted in the death of 15-year-old Mohammed Shahabas, a student at a government-aided school.
Shahabas, who wasn’t a student at the tuition center, suffered severe head injuries during a fight between two groups of students – one from his school in Elettil and the other from a Thamarassery government school. The altercation reportedly stemmed from a dispute over music at a farewell party held on February 23rd. Witnesses report that approximately 15 students were involved, using a martial arts weapon. Despite his injuries, Shahabas was initially taken home before his condition worsened, ultimately leading to his death. A post-mortem revealed a fractured skull.
Social media voice clips surfaced, allegedly revealing some students discussing plans to harm Shahabas and expressing disbelief that the police would investigate a death resulting from a clash. Shahabas’ family also alleges the involvement of non-students in the fight.
The five students, all minors, have been charged under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita and are currently in an observation home following a rejected bail application. Remarkably, they have been permitted to take their Class 10 exams, beginning March 3rd, under police supervision. The General Education Minister, V. Sivankutty, has requested a report on the incident. The investigation continues.
