**Bengaluru, March 1, 2025** – The Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, 2024, aimed at restructuring the city’s civic administration, will soon be tabled in the Karnataka State Legislature, according to Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy. Following its passage, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will be divided into two or three corporations, with elections scheduled for May.
The Bill, initially introduced in July 2024, was recently reviewed by a Joint Legislature Committee. Mr. Reddy stated that the committee’s report has been submitted, paving the way for the Bill’s passage and subsequent elections. These elections are highly anticipated, as the previous BBMP Council’s term ended in September 2020 without subsequent polls.
Mr. Reddy also refuted claims by BJP leaders that their government had invested ₹8,000 crore in Bengaluru’s development. He countered that the BJP government allocated only ₹7,000 crore to city MLAs, with a disproportionate amount (₹5,400 crore) going to BJP MLAs compared to Congress MLAs (₹1,600 crore). He criticized the BJP’s demand for a ₹15,000 crore special grant, asserting that the BJP’s governance had negatively impacted the city’s infrastructure. Mr. Reddy highlighted his government’s previous achievements, including the development of 400 km of roads and various other infrastructure projects, contrasting it with what he described as a lack of significant development under BJP rule.
