**Srinagar, March 1, 2025** – The Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Congress party president, Tariq Hameed Karra, today criticized the continued atmosphere of repression in the Union Territory, claiming that the situation hasn’t improved despite a perceived increase in normalcy. Karra, also an MLA, attributed this to the non-restoration of statehood, arguing that the police remaining under the Home Ministry maintains psychological pressure on the population. He stated that the repressive atmosphere will only improve once the police department comes under the control of an elected government.
These sentiments were echoed by National Conference leader Salman Sagar, who described the current normalcy as “enforced,” alleging that people are still afraid to speak out against the government for fear of law enforcement. Both leaders’ statements highlight concerns about freedom of expression and the impact of the ongoing political situation in J&K.
