NEW YORK, NY – Anti-Israel protests at Barnard College escalated Thursday, leading to multiple arrests by the NYPD. Following a Wednesday building takeover by over 50 demonstrators, approximately 100 protesters, masked and chanting “Free Palestine,” gathered outside the college, later marching to City College and attempting to disrupt an event by Governor Kathy Hochul, which was subsequently cancelled. The protesters reportedly chanted criticisms of Hochul and the NYPD, and attempted to breach police barricades.
The protests stem from the expulsion of two students from Columbia University for disruptive behavior and alleged distribution of hateful materials in January. A faculty member at Barnard was injured during Wednesday’s building takeover, according to Vice President for Strategic Communications Robin Levine, who condemned the protesters’ actions and disregard for campus safety. The protesters, who occupied a building until approximately 11 p.m. Wednesday, issued demands including the reversal of the expulsions, amnesty for other students, and a meeting with college administrators. House Speaker Mike Johnson denounced the protests as “antisemitic chaos,” while Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody called for the deportation of any protesters on visas involved in violence. The protesters have vowed to continue their actions until their demands are met.
