**New Delhi, February 23, 2025** – External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has announced a government investigation into allegations of improper activities by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in India. The investigation follows statements made by former U.S. President Donald Trump questioning a ₹21 million USAID grant aimed at increasing voter turnout. Minister Jaishankar expressed concern over information released by Trump administration officials, suggesting the funding was used to promote a specific narrative or viewpoint.
“Some information has been put out there by Trump administration people, and obviously that is concerning,” Jaishankar stated. He emphasized that while USAID’s presence in India has historically been based on good faith, suggestions of bad faith activities necessitate a thorough investigation. “If there is something to it, I think the country should know who are the people involved in the bad faith activities,” he added.
The minister also broadened the discussion to encompass a wider definition of national security in the digital age. He highlighted the manipulative potential of technology, NGOs, and media narratives in shaping public opinion and undermining democratic processes. “Your security can be threatened without leaving your house,” he warned, citing the influence of social media and online information on individual thought processes.
The Ministry of External Affairs previously expressed deep concern about the revelations, stating they raised issues of foreign interference in India’s internal affairs. The government’s investigation is underway to determine the extent and nature of any misconduct.
