**DETROIT** – Killian Hayes, the former Detroit Pistons point guard and seventh overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, has signed a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets, ESPN reported Wednesday. The move comes after Hayes was waived by the Pistons in February following a four-season stint that saw him fail to meet expectations.
Despite starting 145 games over 210 appearances for Detroit, Hayes struggled to establish himself as a key player. He averaged 8.1 points and 5.2 assists per game, while shooting a subpar 38.2% from the field and 27.7% from three-point range. A hip injury during his rookie season further hampered his development.
After failing to secure an NBA roster spot in the offseason, Hayes played for the Long Island Nets, Brooklyn’s G-League affiliate, where he significantly improved his performance, averaging 16.8 points, 7.7 assists, and 5.4 rebounds in 15 games. His call-up to the Nets coincides with season-ending foot surgery for Bojan Bogdanovic, another former Piston acquired by Brooklyn in a trade.
Hayes’ 10-day contract with the Nets expires on March 1st, the same day the Pistons host the Nets at Little Caesars Arena. This will mark a potentially significant homecoming for the young guard. The Nets, currently struggling with a 20-34 record, hope Hayes can provide a boost to their lineup.
