NEW DELHI – In a first for India, the government has appointed a second Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das will serve alongside the current Principal Secretary, P K Mishra. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) announced the appointment on Saturday, February 22nd. Das’s appointment will be co-terminus with the Prime Minister’s term.

Das, a retired IAS officer with over 42 years of experience in finance, taxation, and infrastructure, served as RBI Governor from 2018 to December 2024. His tenure was marked by navigating India through the COVID-19 pandemic and implementing key monetary policies. He also served as India’s G20 Sherpa and a member of the 15th Finance Commission. Both Das and Mishra are from Odisha.

This unprecedented dual appointment creates a second Principal Secretary position within the Prime Minister’s Office. The government has not yet released details regarding the specific responsibilities of each Principal Secretary.
