**Mumbai, February 22, 2025** – The Maharashtra government has suspended all Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus services to Karnataka from the Kolhapur division following the assault of a bus driver by unidentified individuals in Chitradurg, Karnataka on Friday night.
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced the suspension, citing concerns for the safety of commuters and employees. He stated that services will remain suspended until the Karnataka government addresses the issue and engages in dialogue with Maharashtra. Mr. Sarnaik personally contacted the assaulted driver, Bhaskar Jadhav, to express his concern.
The incident sparked angry protests in Kolhapur, where Shiv Sena (UBT) members stopped Karnataka-registered buses, placing saffron flags on them. They demanded a ban on the Kannada Rakshana Vedike and criticized the Maharashtra Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister for their lack of response to the incident. Vijay Devane, a Shiv Sena (UBT) leader from Kolhapur, stated that the party had banned Karnataka buses from entering Maharashtra.
MSRTC regional manager Anagha Bartakke detailed the events, stating that after receiving a complaint, officials were dispatched to Chitradurg, where the injured driver received medical treatment. An FIR was filed with the Chitradurg police station.
The suspension of bus services represents a significant escalation in tensions between the two states, highlighting concerns over cross-border safety and security. The incident underscores the need for swift resolution and collaborative efforts between Maharashtra and Karnataka to ensure the safety of commuters and prevent further disruptions to inter-state transportation.
