NEW DELHI – Shaktikanta Das, the former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has been appointed as Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) announced the appointment, stating that Das will serve in this role until further orders.

Das, who served as RBI Governor for six years, retired in December 2024. He succeeds P.K. Mishra, who has held the position of Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister since September 11, 2019.

This appointment comes at a time when the Indian government is focusing on strengthening its economic policies and financial administration. Das, a 1980-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, brings extensive experience in finance, taxation, industry, and infrastructure, having served in key positions in both central and state governments. In his new role, he will provide crucial strategic advice on major economic and financial matters, bolstering the government’s decision-making framework.

During his tenure as RBI Governor (2018-2023), Das steered India through significant financial challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic fallout. His expertise was instrumental in navigating the country’s economic recovery. The central government extended his term as RBI Governor for three years in 2021. He was the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
