**Anand, Gujarat, India** – Kash Patel, the newly confirmed Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has become the first Indian-American to lead the agency. His ancestral roots trace back to Bhadran village in Gujarat’s Anand district, from where his family emigrated to Uganda 70-80 years ago.
Members of Patel’s Patidar community confirmed his lineage, noting that his family sold their ancestral home in Bhadran before relocating to Africa. The Chh Gam Patidar Mandal, a community organization, maintains a family tree (vanshavali) documenting 18 generations of Patel’s family, although Patel’s name is yet to be formally added. Records indicate the family lived in the Moti Khadki area of Bhadran before their move.
Following Idi Amin’s expulsion of the Indian community from Uganda in 1972, Patel’s family briefly returned to India before resettling in Canada and eventually the United States, where Patel was born in 1979. While the family hasn’t visited Anand recently, community members remain aware of their history. The organization plans to include Patel’s details in their family records upon receiving permission.
Before his appointment, Patel served as Chief of Staff to Acting Secretary of Defence Christopher Miller. A New York native, he holds a law degree and a Certificate in International Law from University College London. A self-described Gujarati and avid ice hockey player, Patel’s appointment marks a significant milestone for Indian-Americans in US law enforcement.
