**Jaipur, Feb 22, 2025** – Congress MLAs in Rajasthan are staging a sit-in protest inside the state assembly following the suspension of six party members. The protest began Friday night after the Speaker adjourned the House following a heated exchange sparked by a comment made by Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Avinash Gehlot.
Gehlot’s remark, referencing the naming of a scheme after Indira Gandhi, triggered a major uproar, leading to multiple adjournments. Subsequently, a proposal to suspend six Congress MLAs – Govind Singh Dotasara, Ramkesh Meena, Amin Kagzi, Jakir Hussain, Hakam Ali, and Sanjay Kumar – was passed by voice vote.
Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully stated that the MLAs spent Friday night in the assembly and will continue their protest until the suspension is revoked and the minister apologizes for his remarks. He claimed that negotiations with three ministers Friday night were unsuccessful. Jully criticized the government, arguing that the incident was manufactured and that precedents exist for expunging offensive words from the record.
Simultaneously, Congress held protests at all district headquarters across Rajasthan, demanding the minister’s apology and the reinstatement of the suspended MLAs. These protests, led by District Congress Committee presidents, included burning the Minister’s effigy and rallies. Congress leaders condemned Gehlot’s comment as disrespectful to Indira Gandhi and characterized the suspension of the MLAs as arbitrary. The party is demanding the Minister’s resignation.
