Thu Feb 20 19:35:50 UTC 2025: ## Chennai Residents Demand Modernization of Ration Shops

**Chennai, February 21, 2025** – Residents across Chennai are demanding significant improvements to the city’s Public Distribution System (PDS) shops, citing inadequate infrastructure and calling for the construction of new, modern buildings. Numerous councillors have echoed these concerns, highlighting the insufficient space and lack of basic amenities at many existing shops, often operating from cramped rented spaces.

Several residents shared their experiences, describing long waits in unsuitable conditions. K.S. Kannan of Mugalivakkam noted that many shops are under 200 square feet, lacking waiting areas and toilets, forcing residents to wait outdoors regardless of weather. Similar complaints were voiced by Lourde Mary of Mogappair West and V.S. Jayaraman of T. Nagar, the latter highlighting the relocation of a PDS shop to a footpath, resulting in continued inconvenience for residents.

The issue has been raised with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), with councillors like Fatima Ahmed of Egmore ward 61 reporting delays in identifying suitable land for new shop construction. While officials from the Cooperation Food and Consumer Protection Department confirmed they are working with local representatives to address the problem, the lack of adequate space in congested areas remains a significant hurdle. The residents’ plea underscores the need for improved infrastructure to provide a more comfortable and dignified experience for those accessing essential ration supplies.
