**Bengaluru, February 20, 2025** – A selfless organ donation following a fatal accident has given a new lease of life to multiple recipients across India. A serving soldier from Kerala, who suffered severe head injuries in a road accident and was declared brain dead at Command Hospital Air Force Bangalore (CHAFB), donated his corneas, liver, kidneys, heart, and lungs.
The complex operation, facilitated by CHAFB in coordination with Jeevasarthakathe (Karnataka’s State Organ and Tissue Transplant Authority), involved the swift transportation of organs to multiple cities. An organ retrieval team from the Army Hospital (Research and Referral), New Delhi, flew to Bengaluru in an Indian Air Force aircraft to retrieve the organs. One kidney was transplanted at CHAFB, while a Chennai-based team flew in to retrieve the heart and lungs for patients at MGM and Gleneagles hospitals, respectively.
Bengaluru Police collaborated with CHAFB to create a “green corridor,” ensuring the rapid and uninterrupted transport of the organs from the operating theatre to the airport, maximizing their viability.
This multi-city organ donation marks a significant milestone, highlighting the increasing collaboration between military and civilian medical institutions in addressing critical healthcare needs. CHAFB has been actively involved in organ donation initiatives, conducting several such procedures in the past. The soldier’s family’s decision to donate his organs underscores the importance of organ donation in saving lives.
