Thu Feb 20 16:00:23 UTC 2025: ## BJP’s Rekha Gupta Sworn in as Delhi’s New Chief Minister

**New Delhi** – Rekha Gupta, a 50-year-old BJP MLA, was sworn in as Delhi’s new Chief Minister on Thursday in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Her appointment marks the BJP’s first government in the capital after a 27-year absence and is seen as a strategic move on multiple fronts.

Gupta’s selection over more prominent figures like Parvesh Verma surprised many. Analysts point to several reasons for her ascension: her appointment aims to consolidate the support of women voters, a key demographic in the BJP’s victory; it counters perceptions of the party neglecting women in leadership positions; and it strengthens ties with the Baniya community, a traditional BJP support base. Gupta is only the second woman Chief Minister in India, following Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal.

Prime Minister Modi congratulated Gupta on X (formerly Twitter), praising her grassroots political experience and expressing confidence in her ability to lead Delhi’s development. The move also signals the BJP’s focus on promoting younger leaders from within the party’s ranks.
