Thu Feb 20 03:00:22 UTC 2025: ## Trump Slams Potential Tesla India Factory as “Unfair”

**New Delhi/Washington D.C.** – President Donald Trump has voiced strong opposition to Tesla establishing a manufacturing plant in India, characterizing such a move as unfair to the United States. His comments, made during a Fox News interview with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, follow recent reports of Tesla hiring staff in India and exploring market entry.

Trump cited India’s high import tariffs on electric vehicles (EVs), which he previously challenged during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit. While a tentative agreement was reached to work towards a trade deal, Trump reiterated his belief that India’s tariffs make it virtually impossible for Tesla to sell cars in the country. He emphasized that while a Tesla factory in India might be acceptable to the Indian government, it would be detrimental to American interests.

This statement comes despite India’s recent efforts to attract foreign EV manufacturers. In March, the Indian government introduced a new EV policy, significantly reducing import taxes to 15% for carmakers investing at least $500 million in local production.

Trump’s remarks highlight his broader stance on reciprocal tariffs. He reiterated his policy of matching tariffs levied by other countries on US goods, asserting that this approach has proven effective in prompting other nations to lower their own tariffs.

Tesla’s planned Indian market entry, potentially beginning as early as April, currently relies on imports. The company has reportedly already selected showroom locations in New Delhi and Mumbai and is actively recruiting staff. However, the lack of local manufacturing remains a key obstacle to widespread market penetration. The Indian foreign ministry has yet to comment on Trump’s statements.
