Thu Feb 20 07:16:47 UTC 2025: **Supreme Court Rejects Bail for Gangster-Turned-Politician Arun Gawli**

**New Delhi, February 20, 2025** – The Supreme Court today dismissed the bail application of Arun Gawli, a gangster-turned-politician serving a life sentence for the 2007 murder of Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar. Gawli, who claims to have fulfilled the conditions of a 2006 remission policy, had his appeal rejected by both the Bombay High Court and now the Supreme Court.

A bench comprising Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and K. Vinod Chandran upheld the High Court’s decision, refusing to interfere. While the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court had recently granted Gawli a 28-day furlough, his subsequent request for release was denied by the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Prisons (East division) Nagpur, leading to his Supreme Court appeal.

Gawli, founder of the Akhil Bharatiya Sena, rose to prominence from Mumbai’s Dagdi Chawl and served as an MLA from 2004 to 2009. He was arrested in 2006 and convicted in August 2012, receiving a life sentence and a ₹17 lakh fine.
