**NEW DELHI** – Renowned badminton coach Pullela Gopichand has issued a stark warning to parents considering a professional sports career for their children, particularly those from middle-class backgrounds. While acknowledging India’s sporting successes, Gopichand highlighted the precarious future faced by athletes who don’t reach the pinnacle of their sport.
Gopichand, architect of India’s badminton dominance, emphasized the slim odds of achieving elite status. He pointed to the lack of a robust support system for athletes who fail to reach the top, leaving many struggling financially and professionally after retirement. This contrasts sharply with the career security enjoyed by even lower-ranking civil servants.
The coach cited examples of Olympic and Asian Games medalists, including sprinter Jyoti Yarraji, who face difficulties securing suitable employment despite their achievements. He also expressed concern over the post-retirement treatment of legendary athletes like Dhanraj Pillay and Vijay Kumar, questioning the lack of commensurate respect and opportunities afforded to them compared to their bureaucratic counterparts.
Gopichand advocated for a comprehensive support system including educational and career opportunities beyond sports. He suggested integrating sports and education, similar to models in universities like Stanford and Loughborough, where athletes pursue higher education alongside their sporting careers. He also proposed providing athletes with business and administrative training to equip them for life after competitive sports.
“Olympic medalists often find themselves in lower-ranking government positions, having to defer to civil servants despite bringing glory to the nation,” Gopichand stated. “We need a system that provides respect and opportunities equal to those in other professions.”
He urged middle-class families to carefully weigh the risks before pushing their children into professional sports without a backup plan, noting the vast disparity in earnings between cricket and other sports. While acknowledging the dream of producing the next Sachin Tendulkar or PV Sindhu, Gopichand stressed the overwhelming likelihood of failure and the need for realistic expectations. He concluded by emphasizing that athletes deserve better, advocating for a societal shift in perspective to offer them the respect and opportunities they deserve.
