Thu Feb 20 13:53:15 UTC 2025: ## Pakistan’s Zaman Ruled Out of Champions Trophy After Freak Injury

**Karachi, Pakistan** – Pakistan’s Champions Trophy title defense suffered a major setback with the news that star opener Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out of the tournament due to an oblique injury. Zaman sustained the injury during the first over of Pakistan’s opening match against New Zealand on Wednesday.

The injury occurred while fielding, as Zaman chased a drive by New Zealand opener Will Young. Although he managed to stop the ball, he immediately signaled for assistance and left the field. Despite attempting a return, the pain persisted, preventing him from opening the batting. He eventually batted at number four, scoring a low 24 runs before Pakistan suffered a 60-run defeat.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed the news, announcing that Imam-ul-Haq will replace Zaman in the squad. Imam, a 72-ODI veteran, last played for Pakistan in October 2023.

Zaman took to X to express his disappointment but confirmed his support for the team, stating, “Representing Pakistan is an honour… Unfortunately I’m now out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025 but surely Allah is the best planner. The comeback will be stronger than the setback.”

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) initially described the injury as a possible muscular sprain, but further assessment confirmed his unavailability for the remainder of the tournament. The setback leaves Pakistan facing a significant challenge in their bid to retain the Champions Trophy.
