**Manchester, UK** – A 57-year-old Indian-origin nurse, Achamma Cherian, is in critical condition after being stabbed by a patient at Royal Oldham Hospital in Manchester on Saturday. Police have arrested 37-year-old Rumon Haque, who was being assessed at the hospital at the time of the attack, and charged him with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article.

The attack occurred around 11:30 pm on Saturday in the acute medical unit, during a busy shift. Police described Ms. Cherian’s injuries as serious and potentially life-changing. Superintendent Matt Walker expressed the hospital’s support for Ms. Cherian, her family, and her colleagues.

Haque appeared in Manchester Magistrates Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody. He will next appear at Manchester Crown Court on February 18th.

Hospital staff expressed shock and sadness at the incident. Heather Caudle, chief nursing officer at Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, stated that the hospital’s focus is on supporting Ms. Cherian and her family, as well as other staff and patients affected by the incident. All hospital services remain open, and staff are cooperating with the police investigation.

The incident highlights the ongoing issue of violence against healthcare workers. A recent NHS staff survey revealed that 13.7% of employees experienced at least one incident of physical violence in the previous year, with the rate rising to 27.6% for ambulance staff.
