**New Delhi, February 20, 2025** – Rekha Gupta was sworn in as Delhi’s Chief Minister today, marking the BJP’s return to power in the national capital after a 26-year hiatus. Gupta, a first-time MLA, was chosen as the leader of the BJP’s Delhi legislative party on February 19th and subsequently invited by Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena to form a new government. Her appointment makes her the fourth woman to hold the post, following Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi.

The oath-taking ceremony, a lavish affair held at Ramlila Maidan, was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, several Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states, and other dignitaries. Around 30,000 guests were invited, including BJP leaders and workers from across the country. A cultural program preceded the ceremony.

Gupta, expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and the BJP leadership, pledged to work with honesty and dedication for the development and welfare of Delhi’s citizens. Outgoing Chief Minister Atishi offered her congratulations and expressed hope for the fulfillment of BJP’s election promises. Arvind Kejriwal, former Delhi CM and leader of the AAP, also extended his congratulations and offered support for the development of Delhi.

The BJP’s victory ended the 10-year rule of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), with Gupta defeating AAP’s Bandana Kumari by a significant margin in the recent assembly elections. Heavy security measures were in place for the ceremony, with traffic diversions implemented across the city. The event was also marked by celebrations in Gupta’s home village of Nandgarh in Haryana, where residents celebrated her ascension.
