**NEW DELHI** – Delhi residents were jolted awake at 5:36 am on February 17th by a magnitude 4 earthquake, the epicenter of which was unusually close to the city center – Jheel Park in Dhaula Kuan. While Delhi experiences tremors regularly due to seismic activity in the Hindu Kush region, this quake’s shallow focal depth of 5.6 km amplified its impact, causing high-rises to sway and low-rise structures to tremble. Many reported hearing loud rumbling noises.
Although the magnitude was relatively low, the intensity of the tremors surprised many. Dr. Sumer Chopra, director of the Institute of Seismological Research, explained that the quake resulted from the release of locally accumulated strain energy near the Delhi-Haridwar ridge, a geological formation influenced by the continuous movement of the Indian plate towards the Eurasian plate. He noted that Delhi has experienced over 400 minor earthquakes in the past 25-30 years.
The amplified tremors and rumbling sound were attributed to the shallow focal depth and the young Yamuna sediments underlying Delhi. These sediments, around 10,000 years old, amplify seismic waves, making them more noticeable and audible. While no major damage or casualties were reported, the intensity of the shaking caused widespread panic.
Dr. Chopra emphasized that while a major earthquake is not anticipated from this specific epicenter due to the lack of a large fault line nearby, the ongoing pressure building under the Himalayas due to plate movement remains a significant concern. Seismologists anticipate a major earthquake in the region eventually and stress the importance of building earthquake-resistant infrastructure.
