**NEW DELHI** – Tesla is sending a team of officials to India in April to finalize plans for a manufacturing hub in the country, sources have confirmed. The visit will include meetings with high-level government officials, including representatives from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministries of Heavy Industries, Road Transport and Highways, and Commerce.
The electric vehicle giant is eyeing Maharashtra (Chakan and Sambhaji Nagar) and Gujarat as potential locations for its production facility, with an estimated initial investment of $3-5 billion. To benefit from India’s recently revised electric vehicle policy, which offers import duty concessions and other incentives, Tesla will need to apply for the Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India (SPMEPCI) and commit to significant local investment and supply chain development.
This trip follows previous engagements between Tesla executives and the Indian government, including meetings between Elon Musk and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While Musk’s previously planned April visit was cancelled, Tesla’s continued pursuit of the Indian market underscores its potential, despite the country’s smaller EV market compared to China. The Indian government’s push for clean energy and incentives for EV adoption are key factors driving Tesla’s interest.
