Wed Feb 19 04:07:45 UTC 2025: ## Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar Bids Emotional Farewell, Praises Indian Democracy
**New Delhi** – Rajiv Kumar, the outgoing Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), concluded his tenure on Tuesday, describing the Election Commission of India (ECI) building as a “place of worship for democracy.” His departure was marked by an emotional send-off from colleagues.
Kumar, who served as CEC since May 2022, oversaw the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and numerous state assembly elections during his time. His tenure wasn’t without controversy, as he faced criticism from opposition parties and activists regarding issues such as Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and voter list accuracy.
Before leaving the ECI headquarters, Nirvachan Sadan, Kumar expressed confidence in the future of the institution and the strength of Indian democracy. He stated, “This building has amassed heritage in the last 75 years. I am hopeful that it will rise higher. The new team will take it even higher.” He lauded the role of voters and political parties in upholding India’s democratic process.
Gyanesh Kumar, a former senior Union Home Ministry official who played a key role in the government’s decision to revoke Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, will succeed Rajiv Kumar as CEC, assuming office on Wednesday.
The appointment of the new CEC has not been without its own controversy. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the midnight decision to appoint Gyanesh Kumar, noting that the selection process is currently under challenge in the Supreme Court. Gandhi submitted a dissenting note to the selection panel, which includes Home Minister Amit Shah.
