**WOKING, UK** – Rick Buckler, the drummer for the influential British band The Jam, has passed away at the age of 69, his family and former bandmates announced today. Buckler died peacefully on Monday evening in Woking after a short illness, with his family by his side.
The news was confirmed on social media by The Jam’s frontman, Paul Weller, who expressed his shock and sadness. Bass player Bruce Foxton also shared a heartfelt tribute, describing Buckler as “a good guy and a great drummer” whose innovative style significantly impacted the band’s sound.
The Jam, known for their contributions to the punk and new wave scenes of the late 1970s, achieved phenomenal success, scoring 18 consecutive UK top 40 singles between 1977 and their disbandment in 1982. Their hits include “Going Underground” and “A Town Called Malice.” The band’s influence extended beyond music, sparking a revival in mod fashion.
Following The Jam’s split, Buckler and Foxton collaborated in the band From the Jam, while Weller pursued a successful solo career and worked with The Style Council. Buckler had recently cancelled a spoken word tour due to health issues.
In a statement, Buckler’s family remembered him as a “loving husband, father and grandfather,” devoted to many and deeply missed. The cause of death has not yet been publicly disclosed.
