Tue Feb 18 16:07:31 UTC 2025: ## Iranian Diplomat Intervenes in Indian Nurse’s Yemen Death Sentence Case
**Muscat, Oman:** Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has appealed to Houthi representatives in Yemen on behalf of Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse facing the death penalty. Araghchi, who met with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Muscat last week, subsequently spoke with Mohammed Abdul Salam, a special envoy for the Houthi group. Araghchi expressed hope for a resolution, stating that Salam assured him of efforts to find a way forward.
Priya, a 37-year-old from Kerala, was convicted in 2020 for the killing of her Yemeni business partner. While her family has launched an international campaign for clemency, including raising funds for “blood money” to potentially secure a pardon, the case remains complex. The Indian government, while offering assistance, has stated that the matter of Priya’s release rests between the families involved.
Araghchi emphasized the case’s legal nature, stating that a new legal argument is necessary for resolution. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the ongoing instability in Yemen, a country currently divided among three entities, including the Houthi-controlled Sana’a, where Priya is imprisoned. The involvement of Iran, a significant influence over the Houthis, adds a layer of diplomatic complexity to the ongoing efforts to save Priya’s life. Previous reports indicate Iranian officials have previously offered support to India’s efforts to secure Priya’s release.
