Tue Feb 18 12:18:52 UTC 2025: ## Pune GBS Outbreak Linked to Contaminated Chicken and Water
**Pune, India –** A surge in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune has been linked not only to contaminated water but also to chicken from poultry farms near the Khadakwasla dam, according to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
Initial investigations focused on water contamination as the primary cause, particularly in the Sinhagad Road area. However, testing by the National Institute of Virology (NIV) revealed that 23 out of 66 chicken samples tested positive for Campylobacter jejuni, a bacteria known to cause GBS. Five samples also tested positive for norovirus. The NIV also confirmed that water samples from private reverse osmosis (RO) plants and tap water in affected areas contained GBS-causing bacteria.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has responded by sealing contaminated private RO plants and providing treated water to affected areas. The primary water source, a well in Nanded, is being regularly bleached and chlorination levels have been increased. Deputy CM Pawar stressed that thoroughly cooking chicken eliminates the risk and urged citizens not to panic. He added that the situation is under control with few new cases being reported.
While water contamination remains the suspected source in the Sinhagad Road area, officials believe contaminated poultry and RO water are responsible for cases elsewhere in the city. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been tasked with inspecting poultry products and water sources. The government plans to release detailed guidelines for citizens on food safety.
