Tue Feb 18 12:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Massive Fire Engulfs SPS Technologies Warehouse in Abington Township, Schools Closed

**Abington Township, PA –** A large fire erupted at the SPS Technologies warehouse on Highland Avenue Monday night, resulting in the closure of numerous schools and a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. The blaze, which started around 9:35 p.m. and was still smoldering Tuesday morning, prompted a major emergency response.

Witnesses reported an explosion preceding the fire. While all approximately 60 employees were safely evacuated and no injuries have been reported, firefighters battled the blaze throughout the night. Abington Township Emergency Management Coordinator Thomas McAneney stated Tuesday morning that the fire remained active and crews were working to contain it.

The incident led to the suspension of several SEPTA regional rail lines due to proximity to the Glenside Station. As a precaution, all Abington, Cheltenham, and Jenkintown School District schools, as well as area private and parochial schools, were closed Tuesday. A shelter-in-place order is in effect within a one-mile radius due to smoke concerns.

Initial concerns about a potential reaction between firefighting materials and on-site chemicals, possibly leading to arsenic release, were addressed by officials Tuesday morning who stated there were currently no indications of such a reaction. Hazmat crews continue to monitor air quality. Officials confirmed that water runoff from firefighting efforts is being contained on-site, eliminating the risk of contamination to local waterways.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by Abington Township police and the Fire Marshal’s Office. SPS Technologies, a major aerospace fastener supplier, has been operating in the area since 1903. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as they become available.
